Fashionista Or Interior Designer?

By Amanda Cohen on April 29, 2016

Designing your apartment and designing your outfit of the day may seem extremely different; however, you can actually use similar elements to accomplish the perfect outfit and the perfect apartment.

You can essentially divide any outfit into four parts: (1) base color, (2) color/pattern #2, (3) accents colors and (4) accessories. Now, how does this coincide with your apartment? Read further to find out!

Base Color

When choosing how to dress, you have to make sure your base color is something that expresses your individuality and is something that is flattering. You essentially want to do the same with your apartment. When choosing a color for your apartment, you want something simple, so you can accentuate it with cool accessories and decorations.

Think about what you wear on weekdays or an outfit that you could wear every single day and never get tired of. That’s how you want to feel about the apartment that you decorate; you never want to get sick of it and you want to be comfortable. I suggest white or grey for your base color if you prefer something simpler. However, if you like bright colors and busy patterns, try using a blue or purple for your base color.

Color/Pattern #2

You don’t want your apartment to be one solid color, you want to have fun with decorating, so add another solid color or pattern to give your apartment some pizzazz. Floral is extremely trendy in the fashion world at the moment, so maybe do something funky and floral. If floral is too much for you, maybe go with ombré or another solid color or simple pattern.

I love the color pink so that’s what I would do, but if you don’t like pink, maybe make your apartment ocean-inspired or daisy-inspired and do colors like pastel pink and yellow (you will never not be able to smile when you walk into your apartment). Just be sure to choose a color that is not as ~boring~ as your base color because, let’s be real, you don’t want your apartment to look like a jail cell.

Accent Colors

Now it’s time to add some accent colors to your outfit (just think of a patterned romper that has multiple colors on it to complete the look). Accent colors are not meant to be the star of the show; they are meant to bring out the best in the main color scheme of your apartment. Accent colors (or patterns if you are into the busy-looking room) are ones that you can make more “crazy.”

Since accent colors are, well, just accents, there is only going to be a little of the color showing, therefore you can get as crazy as you want with it. You can use bright colors like hot pink, metallic colors, or even some crazy abstract patterns! Think about accent colors as the scarf you would wear with your fall outfit … that’s the look you want, just a little something to make the entire outfit pop.

Accessories

Now, every fashionistas’ favorite part is accessorizing! Accessorizing your apartment is the stage of “interior designing” in which your true fashion ideals come out and take the stage. Some accessories that are necessities are pictures of your friends and families, some throw pillows and blankets, lamps, desk organizers, and some other cool trinkets. When choosing what frames to use for your pictures, use frames that incorporate your accent colors so that they match the room but also pop.

Blankets and throw pillows are also extremely fun to choose because you can go as crazy or as simple as you want. Maybe get a pillow that has concentric circles or graffiti type artwork and then pair those pillows with a cream colored fuzzy blanket. Maybe having lots of throw pillows isn’t your thing so you opt for two solid-colored pillows and a mind-blowing quilt.

Wall art is where every fashionista can shine. Search for designers and magazine covers that have a more vintage-flare and collage your wall. Incorporate some Audrey Hepburn or some hipster images you find on Tumblr. A cool way to jazz up your walls is by finding designers’ old sketches of clothing they created and putting them on your walls. If you want to get really creative, buy a cloth mannequin and push pin these images on the mannequin, making your apartment feel as if it were a designer’s home.

If you are a fashionista, you are also an interior designer. However, as college students who want to embrace their inner Valentino on a budget, I have listed some websites that will inspire you and provide items for your trendy new apartment. Accomplishing the perfect outfit may be second nature, but when accomplishing the perfect apartment, use this as your guide! From one fashionista to another, may the odds forever be in your favor when designing your apartment!
